At the centre of her work is a commitment to surface design as language. Colour, composition and material are not decorative additions, but the means through which design communicates story, mood and identity, while leaving space for interpretation, interaction and play.
Her process is shaped by close observation of the natural and built environment, art, cultural shifts and the stories people carry with them. From this she develops a visual vocabulary that balances structure with intuition, and clarity with depth. Alongside a considered approach, she allows space for testing, reworking and unexpected outcomes, using material and colour to explore ideas as they evolve.
Across more than two decades, her work has spanned a wide range of materials and product categories, from fashion print and woven textiles to ceramics, homeware, stationery, accessories and exhibition pieces. Rather than applying a single design language, each project is approached on its own terms. Colour, print, fabric, lining, construction, trims and hardware are considered together from the outset, allowing the design to respond directly to the object, the material, its environment and the people who experience it.
She is particularly interested in how colour, pattern and material shape the way people experience places, objects and one another, creating work that invites curiosity, connection and exploration.
Alongside her commercial practice, Melanie is increasingly interested in opportunities within healthcare, education, cultural organisations and community settings, exploring how colour, textiles and making can enrich everyday environments and shared experiences.
Melanie collaborates with fashion brands, designers, creative studios and multidisciplinary teams at every stage of development, from early concept and colour direction through to resolved print and surface design, including the adaptation of existing artwork into production-ready repeat.
